Family Medicine Midwest Abstract Deadline Ahead! Students, Residents, Fellows, and Physicians are invited to submit proposals for the Family Medicine Midwest Conference, September 29 - October 1 at the NIU Conference Center in Naperville! Our theme is "Family Reunion: Uniting the Past, Present and Future of Family Medicine."

Family Medicine Midwest provides vital funding support for students. For most of our student attendees, these scholarships make it possible for them to attend the live event. Member Interest Group Updates
NEW: Physician Well-being - The objective of this group is to advance well-being among IAFP member physicians by sharing educational resources and building community. The MIG will share tactics to improve morale and enhance our members’ personal health. All members are invited to their Zoom meeting on May 15 at 8pm for a Book Club to discuss A Doctor's Dozen - Introduction and Lesson 1 (pages 1-26). Members may join the meeting even if you don't have a chance to read these chapters in advance. Details on the website MIG page and the meeting link is on our website calendar.

State Update
E-cigarette bill passes General Assembly HB 1540 passed out of the Senate with a bipartisan 42-11 vote and is headed to Gov. Pritzker for his signature, making Illinois the 18th state to include vaping products in the clean indoor air law.
Medicaid Renewals begin as Public Health Emergency ends
The first Medicaid renewal notices are out for people whose renewal is due by June 1. Customers who do not respond lose their Medicaid coverage a month after their due date. Anyone who is no longer eligible for Medicaid coverage will be notified and will receive information about how to enroll in alternative coverage.
The most important thing your Medicaid patients can do right now is ensure their current address is on file with the Illinois Medicaid program and complete their renewal right away when they are due. Customers can also call 1-800-843-6154 for help with their renewal. Free CME Update on West Nile Virus Another timely warm weather topic is West Nile virus. Through a partnership between CDC and Medscape, clinicians can register for Diagnosis and Management of West Nile Virus Infection: A Case-Based Approach for FREE through Medscape’s website and receive CME credits for completing the course and be able to correctly identify risk factors and symptoms as well as diagnose and prevent West Nile virus disease.

Visit the AAFP's Employment Contracting Resources AAFP has new tools and resources to help family physicians navigate the entire employment contracting experience—from choosing a knowledgeable lawyer to help review contract terms to negotiating key contract provisions. Principal elements of a contract should be spelled out in writing. Whenever possible, physicians should avoid relying on an employer’s verbal assurances and promises, so using the AAFP’s checklist is key. Get started here!

Congratulations to IAFP member David Chung, MD who has been appointed to the State Board of Health by Gov. JB Pritzker. Chung is chief of staff at Sparta Community Hospital.
Evelyn Figueroa, MD was featured in both the Chicago Sun-Times (May 2) and Chicago Tribune (May 10) sharing the work that the Pilsen Food Pantry is doing to support incoming migrants sent from Texas. The pantry provides food and supplies while Figueroa also operates a mobile unit to provide medical care at the temporary sites in the Pilsen area where families are currently staged.
