Federal Update

Once again, IAFP was among the largest contingents participating in AAFP’s Family Medicine Advocacy Summit. Our members met with all but two of our 19 Congressional offices and seven visits included the Congressperson!

Among the issues discussed:
Administrative Burden; asking Congress to pass legislation to streamline and standardize prior authorization and increase transparency in step therapy requirements;
Medicare Payment; find long term solutions to the Medicare physician payment system which lacks an adequate annual update, and
Workforce; urging Congress to invest in strategies that strengthen and diversify the family physician pathway, especially in underserved areas, and bring accountability to federal GME programs so that spending is aligned with workforce needs. We also shared data on the importance of family medicine in Illinois.
While AAFP’s day-to-day advocacy is extraordinary, family physician constituents telling their own stories in person, to their elected officials provides even more power to the message. Photos below show IAFP meeting with Congressman Bill Foster (D-11th) on the left. On the right is Monica Fudala, MD with Resident members Beverly Onyekwuluje, MD and Pablo da Silva, MD.

Add your voice and follow up on the foundation they built on Capitol Hill this week. Use the AAFP Speak Out today and urge Congress to support family physicians and patients!
