2018 Resident Teacher of the Year

The Illinois Academy of Family Physicians Family Medicine Educators Committee created the Resident Teacher of the Year award in 2017 to honor an outstanding resident educator.  All Illinois programs are invited to submit their top resident educator for consideration. Five programs submitted nominations this year.  The committee selected Dr. Sarah E. Stombaugh, who graduated from University of Chicago/NorthShore Family Medicine Residency Program in June.

Dr. Deborah Miller nominated Dr. Stombaugh, who served as a co-chief resident during the 2017-18 academic year. Dr. Miller said quote “She is a born leader with exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills. Her faculty and resident evaluations consistently reflect her as a role model. She is smart, poised and professional.”

Early in residency Dr. Stombaugh decided to pursue a teaching track as part of her elective experience. She has provided formal instruction to her resident colleagues during didactics on topics from dermatology to treating psychiatric patients and more. Her community lectures covered topics such as drugs and alcohol, depression and anxiety and women’s health.

Dr. Stombaugh is now practicing at NorthShore in Evanston for the next chapter of her career. She is a member of the IAFP’s government relations committee and presented her poster: Developing an Obesity Curriculum for Primary Care Physicians at the Family Medicine Midwest Conference in November 2018.   IAFP President-elect Monica Fudala, MD, a faculty member at the NorthShore Family Medicine Residency Program, presented the award to Dr. Stombaugh on December 12.
