Presenter: Cory Carroll, M.D.,  Foothills Family Care, Fort Collines, CO,  Medical Director, Compassion & Choices

The movement for end-of-life options is growing as more and more patients advocate for greater control and autonomy. Ten states and the District of Columbia currently authorize medical aid in dying for terminally ill individuals who meet certain criteria. Modeled after the Oregon Death with Dignity Act, Colorado enacted the Colorado End-of-Life Option Act in 2017. In this presentation, you’ll learn about the practice of medical aid in dying from the perspective of a family physician colleague who has provided medical aid in dying to his terminally ill patients.
By attending this presentation, you will be able to:
1. Describe the clinical criteria for medical aid in dying including patient eligibility, provider responsibilities, medication protocol, and terminology
2. Summarize data on medical aid-in-dying usage in authorized states
3. Discuss the ethical considerations and impact on the doctor-patient relationship
4. Explain the AAFP and AMA positions on medical aid in dying
