Tuesday August 18, 2020 @ 8:00 PM CT - Elective Surgeries during COVID-19

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

   1.  Summarize current data on risk of Covid-19 infection during elective surgery

  2.  Comprehend best practice safety and well-being guidelines (ACS, CMS, etc.)

  3.  Recall guidance on what patients and physicians can expect before, during and after surgery

SUMMARY - With the rapid rate of surgical procedures at both hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers increasing over the past decade – from a reported 48.3 million in 2010 to some 129 million in 2018 – surgery has been seen by many Americans as a solution to pain, injury and disease recurrence and prevention. But in middle of a pandemic, patients are reconsidering. A report issued in May 2020 shows all surgeries declining 20% to 40% year-over-year.

Avoiding surgery can be detrimental to a patient’s health if delayed too long. Family physicians properly guiding a patient through the decision-making process is critical to good health long-term, especially for an aging and more active population in need of joint replacement or broken bone repair – two of the 10 most common surgeries in the U.S.

Keeping the patient’s perspective in mind during this era of Covid-19 is key. Clear, continual, and empathetic communications is needed to calmly convey accurate information. This lecture will help family physicians facilitate a discussion with their patients in need of surgery, giving them details and data a patient desires in making the best treatment decision. Points covered will include –

    *   Risk of contracting Covid-19 during an elective surgery.

  *   Basic safeguards hospitals and surgical centers follow to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
  *   Step-by-step guidance on what patients can expect before, during and after surgery.

A comprehensive plan, including a decision-making process by orthopedic surgeons at a specialty hospital, is detailed. Family physicians will see how patients and medical professionals are reassured of a safe elective surgery – from algorithms to on-site screenings. By better understanding the proper infection prevention protocols surgeons are following during the Covid-19 pandemic, primary care specialists will be enabled to improve communications with their patients considering elective surgery.
