Faculty

Henry C. Barry, MD, MS is a Professor Emeritus of Family Medicine in the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University. After graduating from the University of Maryland, he completed his family medicine residency at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing, Michigan and completed a master’s in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. For 25 years, as one of the original “POETs,” he and colleagues have generated over 6000 POEMs – Patient Oriented Evidence that Matters – short critical summaries of original research on topics relevant to primary care physicians.

Rick Guthmann, MD, MPH, a faculty member of the UIC/ Advocate Illinois Masonic Family Medicine Residency, began writing and editing evidence-based reviews for the Family Practice Inquiries Network in 2003.  He has contributed to Clinical Inquiries, Help Desk Answer, and PURLs.  He is nowthe editor-in-chief for the Clinical Inquiries series which appears in The Journal of Family Practice, Evidence-Based Practice, Canadian Family Physician and American Family Physician.  As the Medical Director for the Advocate Illinois Masonic PHO, he works on quality and utilization improvement.  Dr. Guthmann graduated from Northwestern University Medical School, MacNeal Family Medicine residency and has a Masters of Public Health degree from the UIC School of Public Health.

John Hickner, MD, MS is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Family Practice and Professor Emeritus, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. After receiving his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, he completed his family medicine residency at the Medical University of South Carolina and received a master’s degree in Biostatistics and Research Design from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He was the Cleveland Clinic Chair of Family Medicine from 2009 to 2014 and Head of Family Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 2013 to 2018. Dr. Hickner has practiced Family Medicine for over 40 years. He has taught evidence-based medicine courses to physicians and medical students for more than 25 years.

Katie Kaczmarski, PharmD is a Clinical Assistant Professor in Pharmacy Practice at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Pharmacy and Clinical Pharmacist at the UI Health Family and Community Medicine Center and the UI Health Center for Women's Health. She provides comprehensive medication management, chronic disease state management, and population health clinical services. Additionally, she provides experiential and didactic education for students and residents at the UIC College of Pharmacy, Department of Family and Community Medicine Residency, and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Programs. Her research focuses on improving medication use and clinical outcomes in both primary care and high risk obstetrics populations, as well as advancing clinical services and teaching and learning of student pharmacists. She is a graduate of St. Louis College of Pharmacy and completed residency training through the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. 

Kate Rowland, MD, MS is a core faculty member at the Rush Copley Family Medicine Residency and an associate professor at Rush University.  She is also an associate medical editor for the American Academy of Family Physician’s FP Essentials series and a former editor of the Priority Updates from the Research Literature series. She is a graduate of Rush Medical College and completed post-graduate training at the Advocate Illinois Masonic Family Medicine residency and the University of Chicago primary care research fellowship. She is a regular speaker at the AAFP annual meeting, FMX, and other live CME courses.

Santina Wheat MD, MPH is the Program Director for the McGaw Northwestern Family Medicine Residency Erie Humboldt Park and an Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine.  She earned her medical degree and Masters of Public Health degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  She completed a family medicine residency at McGaw Northwestern Family Medicine Residency Humboldt Park.   She currently primarily provides full primary care primarily to patients living with HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C. She also runs an outpatient procedure clinic with the residents in her program and is part of the maternity care team.  Dr Wheat has a strong interest in reproductive health, social determinants of health and health equity.
