The Illinois General Assembly will reconvene for Veto Session November 13-15 and 27-29.  Watch for action alerts on overriding the governor's veto of SB 2332 so we can make Illinois a Tobacco 21 state.

IAFP leaders at AAFP State Legislative Conference

IAFP President-elect Monica Fudala, MD; Government Relations committee chair Janet Albers, MD and IAFP Deputy VP for External Affairs Gordana Krkic, CAE represented us at the AAFP State Legislative Conference in Orlando.  Dr. Fudala was a panelist on the Opioid panel along with Florida and Washington AFP.  IAFP shared this opioid newsletter produced by our education team.

CMS delays E/M Coding changes to 2021

AAFP, IAFP and many healthcare organizations peppered CMS with comments on its proposed 2019 Medicare fee schedule.  CMS announced its final review this week, which postpones any changes to the current coding and payment structure for E&M outpatient visits coding changes until 2021.  Learn more from Health Leaders Media.

Inspire students and residents to explore all that a future in family medicine has to offer. Workshop proposals for the 2019 AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students are being accepted until November 11. The conference will be held July 25-27 in Kansas City, MO.

Acute Flaccid Myelitis - webinar hosted by the CDC

During this call, subject matter experts from CDC will highlight the importance of reporting cases to learn more about this condition and the process for reporting. They will also cover specimen collection and testing, and what CDC is doing for its AFM investigation.

IL DocAssist, housed at UIC, is a free statewide phone consultation program providing child, adolescent, and perinatal mental health, behavioral, and substance misuse assistance to HFS enrolled providers and allied health professionals. They support providers who care for non-emergent Medicaid-eligible youth with complex behavioral health and pharmaceutical needs. Join Dr. Diane Misch, Director of the Illinois DocAssist program, for a webinar focused on reducing adolescent substance abuse through using motivational interviewing.

Training opportunity Dec. 5: Integrating cross-sector partnerships into complex care practices (Register by 11/19)

Registration is now open for "Addressing Social Determinants through Medical-Legal Partnership: Fundamentals of Implementation in the Complex Care Setting," on December 5, which will examine screening practices, data collection, training, and funding for these cross-sector partnerships. Hosted by the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership, the meeting is intended for clinicians, nurses, allied practitioners, social workers, care coordinators, and health care administrators. It is a pre-conference to the National Center for Complex Health and Social Needs' annual meeting. Participants can attend both, or can register for the pre-meeting alone. NBC 5 in Chicago featured IAFP Family Physician of the Year Thomas D. Huggett, MD, MPH on their 4 pm newscast celebrating his 18 years serving patients on the West side of Chicago.

Another former Family Physician of the Year, Larry Jones, MD was featured in an October 21 Southern Illinoisan article about Southern University of Illinois School of Medicine students who plan to return to their Rural Illinois roots to practice.  Dr. Jones and his practice have been instrumental over 30 years in recruiting physicians to southern Illinois.

Sara Malone, MD and resident member Bria Miller, MD of the SIU Carbondale Family Medicine Residency are featured in today's Southern Illinoisan for participating in a "poverty simulation" to experience and better understand the challenges faced by their low-income patients. 

Will Campbell, DO represented IAFP at the October 30 launch of the Rx Abuse Leadership Initiative (RALI), a convening organization of community and advocacy leaders working to address our nation's opioid crisis. The initiative will focus on areas in need of immediate interventions and long-term reforms.  Dr. Campbell highlighted the IAFP efforts in addressing the opioid crisis from the Safe Rx program, helping to start the Chicago Area Opioid Task Force. IAFP Members participate on the Illinois Opioid Crisis Response Advisory Council and work with Southern Illinois University Health Care/SIU Family Medicine Training Programs and SIH Medical Group leadership to educate clinicians and patients on opioid safety.
