E-cigs survey last chance to provide perspective
E-cigarettes, are in wider use now, and primary care physicians have an important role in counseling patients appropriately on the risks and uses of these products. Please assist the IAFP and CCDPH by completing this short survey on e-cigarette practices in primary care survey. The survey closes June 18 and over 200 providers have given us valuable input to shape our future education efforts around this evolving topic
QUICK POLL - Salary structure
A new survey by the recruiting firm Merritt Hawkins suggests fee-for-service is still the norm and value-based pay is not yet an effective incentive for physicians to change how they practice. Does your salary still include an incentive to increase the volume of services versus a straight salary or income guarantee? The Medical Group Management Association found that about 8% of physician compensation in 2013 reflected patient satisfaction scores and quality metrics such as the percentage of patients with hypertension who have their blood pressure under control, triggering physicians to complain that roughly half of the quality dollars depends on factors out of their control.

Resident Virtual Summit results
Congratulations to our top scoring presenters in the sixth annual IAFP Resident Scholarly Works Virtual Summit held all day on May 31. Eleven residents delivered a 15-minute presentation on either a completed project or a research project in progress. Five residents presented a Help Desk Answer session.

Call for Board Nominations
IAFP will hold elections for our officers and board of directors via online voting, ensuring that all Active members in good standing can run for the board and vote for board members.
Active members in good standing may self-nominate for the positions of board member (three-year term), second vice president, first vice president, or president-elect. Any active member who is less than seven years out of residency may run for the New Physician board member position, which is a two-year term. Finally, there is one delegate and one alternate position to represent Illinois at the AAFP Congress of Delegates, which is a two-year term beginning with the 2018 AAFP Congress of Delegates. The deadline to submit your application and CV to Vince Keenan at [email protected]is June 30. Learn more about each board position on the IAFP web site.

State Update
The General Assembly did not meet this week, as negotiations among leaders continues in an attempt to overcome the budget impasse. A special session has been called for June 21.
This week a judge ruled that Comptroller Susanna Mendoza must prioritize and speed up payments to Medicaid Managed Care organizations, which in turn should resume and maintain payments to providers. Attorneys representing both sides have until June 20 to work out a deal according to a June 7 Crain's Chicago Business article.
Federal Update
The U.S. Senate is considering legislation to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. The Senate legislation is being developed behind closed doors, but is expected to contain similar elements to the American Health Care Act (AHCA) that passed in the U.S. House. The Congressional Budget Office now estimates that, if the AHCA is enacted, 23 million Americans would lose coverage next year.
Illinois senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth have been vocal in their opposition to the AHCA and the negative impact it will have on your patients. You can thank them for their support and provide valuable input on how the loss of ACA protections will harm the people in your practice. In turn, they can use your stories in their discussions in the Senate.
The AAFP has launched a Speak Out urging legislators to oppose any legislation that would leave millions of patients without affordable coverage. You can send a message directly to Senators Durbin and Duckworth, tailoring the message to encourage them to keep up their efforts!
New Medicare Cards are coming in 2018. Make sure your practice is ready for the transition.
CMS will issue new Medicare cards with a new unique, randomly-assigned number called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) to replace the existing Social Security-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) both on the cards and in various CMS systems we use now. AAFP Health Equity Fellowship - Apply by July 15
The Leaders for Health Equity (LHE) Fellowship is a professional development opportunity for early-mid career professionals with a commitment to health equity. The program, offered by the George Washington University, aims to develop global leaders who understand the foundations of health inequity and have the knowledge, skills, and courage to build more equitable systems and organizations. The experience is designed to bring together the many diverse industries and professions that influence health and well-being and is not limited to healthcare professionals/practitioners. Take Back MEDS Program
IAFP is partnering with the Cook County MEDS Disposal Initiative, a new public education campaign focusing on the proper disposal of expired, unused and unwanted prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications.
This effort will focus on four key areas: Management, Education, Disposal and Storage.

Health IT survey
Your input about Health IT in Illinois is critical to determining the extent of health information technology use by providers and hospitals in Illinois. Survey topics include EHR adoption, utilization and functionality, as well as Health Information Exchange participation. The results will help with current and future support and resources for providers, practices and hospitals in Illinois.
Your participation is invaluable to the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid (CMS), the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS), and the Illinois (ILHITREC) and Chicago (CHITREC) Health IT Regional Extension Centers.

July 31 is the Deadline for Medical License Renewal
The deadline for renewing your license to practice medicine in the state with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) is July 31. The process must be completed online.
The cost of a three-year medical license renewal is $690. Remember to also renew your controlled substance licenses - each costs $15 and requires a separate process.
ISMS members can take advantage of the Illinois State Medical Society's renewal and call 800.632.7478, plus you won't have to pay the $16 "convenience fee" IDFPR charges for the renewal.

Geoffrey Bland, MD of Springfield was on a bike ride when fellow cyclist, and his patient, David Burtle was stricken with a heart attack miles out on a bike trail. Bland and several other physicians on the ride combined to perform CPR for 24 minutes until an ambulance arrived. Their efforts saved the 45-year old Burtle's life. Read the story from the June 15 State Journal Register.
Bernard Ewigman, MD - Endowed Chair of Family Medicine at University of Chicago - Pritzker School of Medicine - participated in a panel of researchers at a May 25 forum sponsored by the Robert Graham Center for Policy Studies in Family Medicine and Primary Care discussed how primary care-focused research is improving patient care even though other research into a narrow band of aliments gets outsized attention.
