The 2015 annual meeting is a unique opportunity for IAFP members to learn, collaborate and expand their horizons.  The meeting will be co-located and intertwined with the Family Medicine Midwest Conference, uniting 12 states in a Midwest regional effort to attract the next – and larger – generation of family physicians.  The theme truly sums up our specialty:  Celebrating Diversity: Our Patients, Our Communities and Ourselves.  CME programming will be targeted to all learners and delivered by presenters from around the Midwest.  Two incredible plenary speakers will kick off each day:  Wanda Filer, MD, MBA, FAAFP, soon-to-be AAFP President, will open on Saturday and Chicago’s own Fred Richardson, MD, FAAFP will share his story on Sunday morning.  There are three SAMs workshops on the schedule, and five Friday pre-conference collaborative seminars on an incredible span of issues.  Save $50 if you register before September 1Learn more about the meeting here.

State Update

Veto of SB661 (mandated Hep C screening) CALL TO ACTION - Governor Rauner issued a total veto of SB 661, which would have required physicians to offer Hepatitis C screening to patients born between 1945-1965. The bill now returns to the Senate, where it is expected the sponsor of the bill (Sen. John Mulroe) will file a motion to override the governor’s veto.  Consideration of the motion to override could occur as early as September 9th when the Illinois Senate is scheduled to return to Springfield. The bill originally passed with 33 senators voting yes, 19 voting no and seven members not voting.  View the April 23 Senate roll call for SB 661 and see how your senator previously voted. If your senator voted no, contact him or her to express your thanks and urge continued opposition. Urge the senators who voted yes to reconsider their votes.  Urge those who are listed as not voting (NV) to consider our arguments against the bill and oppose any motion to override.  Refer to our letter urging the Governor to veto the bill.

JCAR rejects raw milk rules - On Aug. 11th, the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules (JCAR) deliberated proposed rules by the IL Dept. of Public Health regulating the sale of raw milk. IAFP submitted a letter for their consideration. JCAR objected to the proposed rules directing the Department of Public Health to revisit the issue with all stakeholders including local health department, conventional milk producers, as well as raw milk producers to develop more acceptable regulations. The JCAR members were concerned that regulations must be developed as per current state statute, but should be done in a manner that does not unduly impact consumers’ access to raw milk.
