I hope this message finds you healthy in the face of this pandemic. More than ever, we are called upon by our patients, friends, and community leaders to be the voice of reassurance and a trusted resource in an uncertain time. I’m proud that we are prepared and willing to fill that role as we always have for our communities.

You will continue to receive a Wednesday Weekly COVID-19 email from IAFP containing new and updated information (COVID-19 recommended resources here). On Sundays, you will receive a separate email containing COVID-19 educational activities, which can be found on this new web page.

Members in the News
Thanks to our leaders who joined their members of Congress for live webinars on COVID-19 issues. On Monday, Dr. Natalie Choi (program director at the Northwestern Family Medicine Residency in Geneva) joined Cong. Lauren Underwood for a Town Hall focusing on parents and children. Dr. Kate Rowland (Rush Copley FMR) joined Cong. Sean Casten’s Town Hall hosted by AARP. Thomas Huggett, MD and Steven Rothschild, MD joined Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot for a press conference that same day to announce a partnership to help the homeless safely isolate.

Federal Updates

On April 10, HHS announced the immediate disbursement of the first $30 billion of the $100 billion that Congress allocated to hospitals, physicians, and other health care providers in the Public Health and Social Services Emergency Fund in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.The distribution policy reflects recommendations that the AAFP and other medical societies made to the administration.

The IAFP board of directors will meet this Saturday morning. Our planned in-person meeting will now take place virtually on Zoom. While it may not be as funny as last weekend’s Saturday Night Live broadcast from home, I’m looking forward to some “face time” with my fellow board members.

Sincerely,

Michael A.  Hanak, MD, FAAFP
Acting President
