ILLINOIS ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS PAST PRESIDENT APPOINTED TO LEAD COOK COUNTY BUREAU OF HEALTH

(Lisle, Ill. )  Carolyn C. Lopez, MD of Chicago will take over the Cook County Bureau of Health Services as announced by Cook County President Bobbie Steele at a press conference this morning.

Dr. Lopez, the current Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at John Stroger Hospital was appointed along with Dr. Linda Rae Murray to replace Dr. Daniel Winship, who resigned yesterday.

Lopez is a longtime leader in the family physician community.  She served as president of the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians in 1992-93 and later as Illinois’ delegate to the American Academy of Family Physicians.  She ascended to national leadership positions at AAFP, first as AAFP Congress of Delegates Vice Speaker and then Speaker.  She currently serves as co-chair of the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians Foundation, where she established the Margaret Perez Lopez Endowment, which provides funding for two students to participate in the IAFP Foundation’s Summer Externship Program each year.

“Family physicians play a vital role in caring for County patients of all ages; so the primary care perspective will be of tremendous value in restructuring the system to better meet the needs in Cook County,” said Vince nt D. Keenan, executive vice president of IAFP.  “Carolyn is an outstanding physician and a proven leader in family medicine.  We believe that County health care system will see great improvements with Dr. Lopez and Dr. Murray leading the change.”
