The Illinois Tar Wars program has been fighting tobacco use in
our schools since 1998. Over 300 schools have been matched up with a
network of nearly 200 IAFP physicians, medical students, residents,
nurses and other caring health professionals. These volunteers are
in the communities teaching this valuable anti-tobacco lesson. By
reaching out to fourth and fifth graders, before they try that first
cigarette, we are making a difference!
Tar Wars is a nationwide program, culminating in a National Tar
Wars Poster Contest in Washington, D.C. Illinois sends our statewide
poster contest winner to the National Poster Contest. This past
July, Patrick Blackert of Mineral, Ill. enjoyed a fantastic trip to
Washington, thanks to the IAFP Foundation’s Tar Wars efforts. In
order to sustain our outstanding efforts, we need your help to keep
Tar Wars at work in Illinois.
The state of Illinois currently only spends $11 million per year
fighting tobacco use, but the state currently is not offering grant
funding to other organizations for tobacco prevention. The U.S.
Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that
Illinois spend at least $67 million per year to make progress in
reducing tobacco use. Until the State provides sufficient funding to
fight tobacco, Tar Wars must rely on donations to survive.
