Illinois Tar Wars poster contest winner takes on Capitol Hill

Peoria fifth grader Alexandra Slane was one of 35 state poster contest winners who gathered in Washington , DC for the National Tar Wars Poster Contest.

It’s a banner year for Tar Wars, as the program celebrates 20 years of keeping our kids off tobacco.  Founding Father Jeff Cain, MD of Denver , Colorado served as master of ceremonies leading the 35 students and their families through a two-day agenda of education and excitement.

With funding from the Family Health Foundation of Illinois for their travel and hotel expenses, Alexandra and her mother Lisa Slane joined this historic event.  Alexandra’s grandmother, Paula Lewis also joined the trip.

Though Alexandra’s poster did not place in the top ten, the three ladies made the most of this opportunity taking in the many historic and cultural sights of our nation’s capital.  They also got the ultimate DC experience, capping off their trip with a rare private tour of the White House on their last day, led by their Congressman, Ray LaHood (R-18th).
