2007 Resident Roundup Events

The IAFP Foundation and Health Care Associates Credit Union teamed up to present three resident workshops on financial issues specific to family medicine residents in 2007.  The first two were held in April:  Saturday, April 14th in Oak Park and Thursday, April 19th in Springfield (in conjunction with the SIU Family Medicine Practice Management Seminar) focusing on the financial implications of various practice settings and the importance of market research in determining where you want to practice.  The third event was held October 23rd in Chicago with a focus on employment contracts and negotiations.

These events also brought residents from various programs together under one roof and gave them time to network and share stories with each other.

Resident attendees gave rave reviews on their evaluations of the information and the presentations by Joe Wheeler of U.S. Advisors Consulting.   Mr. Wheeler contracted with HACU to provide the information that family medicine residents need as they prepare to enter the workforce.

"While busy learning the ins and outs of decubitus ulcers, stages of labor, and asthma care, we often ignore the essentials of practice management,” said Ravi Shah, MD, resident member of the IAFP board of directors.  “The Resident Roundup topics aptly reminded us that medicine is a business in the real world, and taught us how to successfully navigate financially through its twists and turns after finishing residency."

The Family Health Foundation of Illinois (formerly IAFP Foundation) is grateful for the support of Healthcare Associates Credit Union (HACU) for creating a program tailored specifically for resident physicians.  We urge you to contact Norma Cantrell, Director of Business Development/Member Relations at HACU with questions at 630-276-5730 in Chicagoland or toll-free at 800-942-0158 or visit www.hacu.org to see all the products and services they offer.

“We residents have unique and specific needs in this phase of our career. The Resident Roundup events have given us an opportunity to interact and hang out with each other and discuss issues relating to our residency experience such as job opportunities, contracts and , interview process, CME activities& board exams,” adds Helen Williams, MD, the resident member of the IAFP Foundation board of directors.

The IAFP and the Foundation have helped provided funding, resources and support for several resident opportunities over the years.

“As the resident voice to the Foundation, I want to know how (a) useful these events and similar programming in adequately meeting our needs as residents; (b) what else we need to be well informed and excellent physicians and be prepared for life after residency; and (c) whether current events or programming need to be changed or adjusted to meet our needs,” concludes Williams.

The Foundation hopes to host resident events in 2008 focusing on topics suggested by the 2007 Resident Roundup attendees on their evaluation forms.  If you have suggestions for topics you’d like to see covered for IAFP resident members, please e-mail them to Ravi and Helen at IAFPResidents@yahoo.com.
