Illinois Prepares for Leading Health Care Reform at AAFP State Legislative Conference

The Illinois Academy of Family Physicians is proud to have two of our leaders on the AAFP’s Commission on Governmental Advocacy:  Ellen Brull, MD of Glenview and Javette C. Orgain, MD of Chicago .  The State Legislative Conference is AAFP’s annual gathering of their national staff and CGA along with state chapter leaders and staff to discuss current topics and emerging issues at both the federal and state legislative levels.

Fresh off a groundbreaking election that guarantees major changes in the White House and in the political makeup of the US Senate and House, this proved to be an excellent time for family medicine leaders from around the nation to gather and make plans to lead the charge for desperately needed health care reform.

Much of the education focused on making the case for the Patient Centered Medical Home.  Attendees got an update about the upcoming Medicare medical homes pilot project planned for 2009-2011.  States who have already been working on their own versions of medical homes shared their plans and progress.  Much attention was also devoted to primary care physician workforce issues.   Although our 50 states are very different in their location, demographics and inside politics, we all do have some similar issues and concerns about building a strong primary care physician base for our future.

Without question, all family physicians leaders will be needed to make our case here in Illinois on state policy and with our Illinois Congressional delegation in shaping the future of federal legislation.  Illinois has enjoyed great successes in our trips to Washington , DC , in our constant communication with our Congressional Delegates here at home and in our contributions to FamMedPAC.  We must dedicate ourselves to these three ongoing approaches in advocating for family medicine and our patients.

What can you do?

1.  Contribute to FamMedPAC.   By law, AAFP dues cannot be used for any candidate or election purposes.  The only way for AAFP to contribute to elected officials is though the PAC.   If even 10 percent of AAFP members contributed just $1 per day, a $365 annual contribution (called Club George, as in Washington ) we would have one of the most powerful PACs in the Country.  Learn how you can donate at http://www.aafp.org/online/en/home/policy/fammedpac.html

2.  Become an AAFP Key Contact or join the Advocacy Action Team.  A Key Contact is the Academy’s primary contact constituent for AAFP and is asked to meet personally with that Congressperson in the district and DC.  An Action Team member would be asked to contact his or her member of Congress as needed and be available to advocate on issues throughout the year.  Learn more about each option at http://www.aafp.org/online/en/home/policy/grassroots/howto.html or download the entire AAFP Grassroots Advocacy Toolkit at http://www.aafp.org/online/etc/medialib/aafp_org/documents/policy/grassroots/toolkit.Par.0001.File.tmp/AAFPGrassrootsAdvocacyToolkit.pdf

3.  Be our best state advocate!  Come to Spring into Action in 2009.

This is your best opportunity to represent Illinois family medicine, your practice and your patients in the state legislature.  By offering Spring into Action lobby days throughout the session, we can ensure that:

1.  All interested family physician members have the opportunity to participate on a date convenient to them.

2.  IAFP has family medicine advocates available throughout the session to respond when specific bills or hearings require our input.

Specific dates for Spring into action will be announced in December.  For more information or to plan your day at the Capitol, please contact Gordana Krkic, CAE , vice president of government relations at gkrkic@iafp.com or 630-427-8007
