State Update

ACTION ALERT – ask your state representative to vote NO on certified professional midwives!
House Bill 4341 contains few restrictions on what services are provided by certified professional midwives. In addition, education and licensure requirements are noticeably absent and even if specified would fall well below the standards for nurse midwives. You can link to the bill summary to see if your representative is a co-sponsor. Find contact information for your state representative athttp://www.ilga.gov/house/ Link to the fact sheet with information and talking points.

Medical Practice Act is renewed!
Good news, you’re still licensed to practice medicine in Illinois for another year! The House concurred on the Senate’s extension of the Medical Practice Act on a vote of 109-0. The extension remains a one-year deal. The language is in Senate Amendment 1 to HB 1365.

Federal Update

AAFP Congressional Briefing on Value Based Payment
As our country moves towards a major overhaul away from fee for service, AAFP and Humana provided information to Congressional staff and the media about the current readiness state of family physicians in a Congressional Briefing this week. While about 1/3 of the members surveyed are already in or pursuing plans for value based payments, a full 1/4 are not sure where they stand. One of the most important factors will be consistency and streamlining as 61 percent of respondents contract with at least seven payers or health care plans. Learn more from the AAFP News coverage.

AAFP Speak Out to stop MU Stage 3

Time to join forces and help AAFP drive home the message to stop MU Stage 3. With only 10% of physicians currently attesting to Meaningful Use Stage 2, and 43% of physicians facing penalties in 2015, more time is clearly needed. Tell Congress to pause Stage 3 implementation, before a well-intentioned program drives away the professionals it seeks to help.  Use the Speak Out link to send your letter today!
