IAFP and Northwestern FMR awarded AAFP mini grants
Two out of 10 mini-grants awarded by AAFP for healthy interventions on tobacco use prevention and treatment are headed to Illinois.

Illinois Academy of Family Physicians
Through participation in a quality improvement project, providers will create a system to screen, identify, and counsel at-risk patients and parents of pediatric patients on the dangers of tobacco use, advise them to quit, and refer them to cessation resources. The goal of this project is to increase both screening and counseling for tobacco use during patient visits.

McGraw Northwestern Family Medicine Residency Program (Grayslake)
This project will incorporate e-cigarette questioning into the EHR as part of the definition of meaningful use, enabling residents to identify individuals — namely adolescents — who would benefit from early detection of e-cigarette use and intervention.

State Update

The Illinois General Assembly was in session on Tuesday. Among their considered legislation, the Medical Practice Act was passed as Senate Amendment #1 to House Bill 1365. Update your bookmark for IDHFS

This week, the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services phased out their old website (http://www2.illinois.gov/hfs) and it will no longer be updated. Any new changes will occur only on the new site (http://www.illinois.gov/hfs). The old site will be completely phased out no later than 11/20/2015.

Federal Update

Are you all set with PQRS? Check your status by Nov. 23
CMS has extended the 2014 informal review period for the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) to Nov. 23. Physicians who participate in the Medicare fee-for-service program, the Comprehensive Primary Care Initiative, PQRS group practice reporting option, or an accountable care organization face a negative 2 percent payment adjustment for Medicare services in 2016 if they fail to report 2014 quality measures through the PQRS program.

You may also wish to review CMS’s 2014 Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS): Incentive Eligibility & 2016 Negative Payment Adjustment -- Informal Review Made Simple. Finally, you can contact the CMS QualityNet Help Desk at 1-866-288-8912 (TTY 1-877-715-6222) or [email protected] Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central.

AAFP Speak Out to stop MU Stage 3

Time to join forces and help AAFP drive home the message to stop MU Stage 3. With only 10% of physicians currently attesting to Meaningful Use Stage 2, and 43% of physicians facing penalties in 2015, more time is clearly needed. Tell Congress to pause Stage 3 implementation, before a well-intentioned program drives away the professionals it seeks to help.  Use the Speak Out link to send your letter today!
