Use AAFP Speak Out to stop MU Stage 3

Time to join forces and help AAFP drive home the message to stop Meaningful Use Stage 3! With only 10% of physicians currently attesting to Meaningful Use Stage 2, and 43% of physicians facing penalties in 2015, more time is clearly needed. Tell Congress to pause Stage 3 implementation, before a well-intentioned program drives away the professionals it seeks to help. Use the Speak Out link to send your letter today!

State Update

IAFP board chair Janet Albers, MD has been named by Governor Bruce Rauner to serve on the Physical and Behavioral Health Integration Workgroup. This Workgroup is part of the Illinois State Innovation Model (SIM) initiative, which is led by the Governor’s Office to improve the health of people in Illinois. In 2015, the federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) awarded Illinois an additional $3 million for round two of the SIM design. The purpose of this one-year initiative is to build upon key findings from round one, focusing on recommendations and strategies to improve the integration of physical health and behavioral health services.

Faculty proposals must be submitted online and the deadline to submit proposals is November 5, 2015. The 2016 FMX will be held September 20-24 in Orlando, FL.

One IAFP member, Steven LoBue of Wheaton, shared his tragic story via a letter to the editor in Monday’s Chicago Tribune. LoBue and his wife lost an infant son to meningitis just two weeks before he would have been eligible for a vaccine, according to the guidelines present at that time - 25 years ago. He urged families to protect their children with all recommended vaccines on schedule.

Kameron Mathews, MD is featured in DNAInfo.com and the online publication Colorlines for co-founding a unique program called “Doctors on the Bus” where she takes minority physicians to universities to inspire and encourage minority students to choose careers in medicine by providing positive and credible role models who reflect their communities. The bus is headed out west in Novembers, visiting the University of Washington and Portland State University.

Jerry Kruse, MD, who was recently named the next Dean of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, spent about 10 minutes live on the air with WUIS-AM (Illinois NPR) radio this week talking about the medical school, the impact of the Affordable Care Act, the need for more primary care physicians, and expansion of SIU services in Decatur.
