Disaster Relief - Where you can help your fellow members now!

Your family in California needs you. The Santa Rosa family medicine residency building/clinic are severely damaged and we know several faculty/residents may have lost homes. California Academy of Family Physicians Foundation (CAFP-F) is collecting contributions; their President-Elect Lisa Ward, who practices in Santa Rosa, will help coordinate the relief efforts. http://www.familydocs.org/firerelief.

The Indiana AFP is spearheading relief efforts to aid (generators, communication and supplies) Puerto Rico AFP members in caring for their devastated communities. Members of the Puerto Rico Academy of Family Physicians have been on hand to personally accept and deliver supplies, and they will continue to do so as long as they are needed. You can donate via Indiana AFP https://www.in-afp.org/make-a-contribution.

Federal Update

On September 28, the House of Representative approved legislation extending Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) program funding for three months. The extension was included in HR 3823, a bill to fund disaster assistance and other programs. The Senate approved it by unanimous consent, and President Donald Trump is expected to sign it. The AAFP signed a joint letter to congressional leaders urging sustained THCGME support. House and Senate leaders are committed to a long-term reauthorization later this year for these key primary care workforce programs. Sixty-one bipartisan Senators, including Illinois senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth signed a letter in support of the Community Health Centers Fund, THCGME and the National Health Service Corps.
