The 2015 annual meeting is a unique opportunity for IAFP members to learn, collaborate and expand their horizons.  The meeting will be co-located and intertwined with the Family Medicine Midwest Conference, uniting 12 states in a Midwest regional effort to attract the next – and larger – generation of family physicians.  The theme truly sums up our specialty:  Celebrating Diversity: Our Patients, Our Communities and Ourselves.  CME programming will be targeted to all learners and delivered by presenters from around the Midwest.  Two incredible plenary speakers will kick off each day:  Wanda Filer, MD, MBA, FAAFP, soon-to-be AAFP President, will open on Saturday and Chicago’s own Fred Richardson, MD, FAAFP will share his story on Sunday morning.  There are four SAMs workshops on the schedule, and five Friday pre-conference collaborative seminars on an incredible span of issues.  Mark your calendars now and register today.  Save $50 if you register before September 1.  Learn more about the meeting here.

Important Reminder – vote for IAFP board of directors
Active and Life members are reminded to vote for elections by September 11. Thanks to everyone who completed the Active Member Survey by August 2.  All emails were put in to a drawing and congratulations to Alap Shah, MD who won the $200 Visa Gift Card!

Government Relations

State Update

This week Gov. Bruce Rauner signed SB1410, which will tighten the rules and the informed consent for exempting children from required vaccinations. IAFP advocated for this bill at Spring into Action and throughout session. Read the IDPH Press Release

Other bills of interest from this session are now “law of the land”

Nurse Collaboration - HB421 (Rep. Feigenholtz D-12) was signed into law on July 29th and is now Public Act 99-0173. This legislation updated the APN practice act among other provisions agreed upon with physicians and APNs. Nothing in this Act will prevent a physician from including any restrictions on practice or requirements for communication within the collaborative agreement.

SB1498 amends the Good Samaritan Act to provide liability protection for Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps members assisting certified local health departments during emergencies that are not declared disasters. IAFP was listed as a supporting organization on the fact sheet. The bill was signed into law on July 14th and is now Public Act 99-0042
