It Might Just be Fluid? A Closer Look at Newborn Hearing Screening
Thursday, September 24th, 12:00pm - 1:00pm CST
Presented by: Dani
el Morra, MD, Right from the Start Pediatrics, Breese/Shiloh, IL

Learning Objectives:

  • Review some of the history behind newborn screening (hearing screening in particular) and its importance for each and every baby.
  • Explore the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention process and the importance of the 1-3-6 algorithm to identify hearing loss in newborns and plan the subsequent follow-up.
  • Recognize that when there are abnormal results on a newborn hearing screening, every abnormal result should be taken seriously (reported) and that a diagnosis of normal hearing or abnormal hearing (deafness) should be reached.
  • Understand that in the case of confirmed newborn hearing loss (deafness), many steps must be taken with regard to follow-up, including subsequent testing and intervention, reporting of abnormal results, and specialist referrals.
  • Describe the lack of knowledge on this topic and understand that you, as family physicians and respected and trusted health care providers, have a role in educating parents and fellow physicians, among others, in the importance of newborn hearing screening, follow-up of abnormal results, and attention to a child's hearing throughout childhood and beyond.
