CALL FOR RESOLUTIONS

The Illinois Academy of Family Physicians invites members to submit resolutions for consideration by the IAFP All-Member Assembly on Saturday December 6, 2008 at 12:15 p.m. in St. Louis , Mo.

Resolutions must be submitted in writing no later than 45 days prior to the All-Member Assembly ( October 17, 2008 ).  Resolutions should be sent via e-mail to Vincent D. Keenan, CAE , executive vice president at vkeenan@iafp.com or via mail to the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians 4756 Main St. Lisle, IL 60532.

Late resolutions may be submitted in writing after October 17 or on site December 6.  In the case of a late resolution, three-quarters of the voting members present at the All-Member Assembly must vote in favor of consideration of any late resolution.

All resolutions requiring the expenditure of funds must be accompanied by a fiscal note in order to be considered.

AAFP offers guidelines for writing resolutions for their National Conference of Special Constituencies.  Their guidelines about a resolution’s purpose and function are the same philosophies to consider if you wish to submit a resolution to IAFP.

Every resolution must have a title, “whereas” clause(s), and “resolved” clause(s) and carry the author’s name(s). The title should convey the general idea of the topic of the resolution.
-The “whereas” clause(s) should explain the rationale for the resolution – identify a problem or need for action
-The "resolved" clause(s) are the only portion(s) of the resolution which are subject to adoption. Whatever policy or action is called for must be in the "resolved" portion.

Remember these tips when writing the "resolved" clause(s):

• The "resolved" portion(s) must be written to stand alone.  Each “resolved” clause should be perfectly clear without the rest of the document present.
• The action called for must be action within the purview and resources of the IAFP.
• Call for only one action in each "resolved" clause. If multiple “resolved” clauses are included in a resolution, each “resolved” clause should be related to the central subject of the resolution.

Give special attention to the following:
• Limit the number of "whereas" clause(s) to the minimum required to provide reasonable support for the "resolved" clause(s).
• Carefully check the facts and verify the data used.
• Limit the use of adjectives or qualifying adverbs which are opinion.
