Foundation's Mission Statement
Assuring access to Family Physicians and the quality of care they provide to all citizens of Illinois.

Background
In 1987, the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians (IAFP) created the IAFP Foundation. The IAFP Foundation shares resources and information with the AAFP Foundation's network of 39 affiliated chapter Foundations.

The IAFP and its Foundation are two distinct organizations which enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship. The two are closely aligned in their missions and work together to achieve their common goal of improving healthcare for the people of Illinois.

The IAFP Foundation exists to address the philanthropic needs of family physicians in Illinois while supporting the advancement of family medicine through charitable, educational, public service, research and scientific programs.

The Foundation assists the academic advancement of family physicians in areas of research, education and healthcare delivery by awarding grants to individuals and institutions engaged in creative studies and activities.

A vital element of the Foundation's mission is to encourage philanthropy by family physicians, the corporate community and the general public.

Programs the Foundation Supports

Student Activities

Summer Externship Program:   Over 500 students have participated in the IAFP Foundation Summer Externship Program since the program began in 1990.  We are now celebrating our 13th year of offering first-year medical students with clinical experiences in a family practice setting.  Selected students are paired with a family physician for a four-week period to observe the day-to-day routine of the specialty; each student receives $1,000 for their participation.  The IAFP Foundation firmly believes that a Summer Externship experience with a family physician has the potential to influence medical students to choose family medicine and ultimately provide cost-effective, preventive services to the people of Illinois.

The IAFP has been tracking the externs through residency to determine whether the program had an impact on students choice of medical specialty and practice location selection.  Early results indicate that 34% of the students who have participated in the Summer Externship Program are choosing family medicine.  That is more that DOUBLE the national average.  Also, 68% are choosing a primary care specialty, compared to the 20 perent national average.  Nearly half of these students are remaining in the state of Illinois.  These results indicate that this program is meeting with the mission of the IAFP Foundation, which is to enhance healthcare delivery to the people of Illinois.

Student Forum - Saturday, October 26, 2002 at the Oak Brook Marriott, Oak Brook, IL. This procedural clinic and residency fair is open to all medical students interested in learning about family medicine.

National Conference of Family Practice Residents and Medical Students:  The IAFP Foundation provides financial support to medical students from each medical school in Illinois to attend the AAFP's National Conference.  The conference is the largest gathering of medical students in the country, and offers a wide range of activities for students and residents, including procedural workshops, leadership workshops, an enormous residency fair, an introduction into the business and political side of medicine, and plenty of networking opportunities.

Resident Activities

The IAFP Foundation has made a  pledge to support 3 slots per year for a total of $7500/year to the AAFP Foundation's Resident Repayment Program. The RRP repays up to 75 percent of the interest that recipients pay on their educational loans from their first year of residency through the first year of practice.

Patient Education Conference - make plans to attend the 24th annual Conference on Patient Education, November21-24, 2002 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.  The AAFP and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) sponsor the Conference on Patient Education, the only national meeting of its kind, targeting family physicians and other primary care health care professionals.  The conference consistently wins high marks from residents.  Scholarship are available and are due on July 16, 2002.  Award notification letters will be sent in September.  For more information contact Kathleen O'Kane at kokane@aafp.org  or Jayne Kittell at jkittell@iafp.com

Resident Research Symposium - the forum is divided into 3 parts:  displays, resident research presentation and information exchange between residents and more experienced family practice researchers.  The Forum is intended to stimulate interest in family practice research among family practice residents, as well as assist residents who may be actively pursuing a specific research project.  Also, it will serve as a means of introducing residents to the family practice research community that exists beyond family practice residencies.  The 2002 forum was  held at the Doubletree hotel in Rosemont on Saturday, June 22 from 9am-1pm.
