CME Teleconferences Help Physicians Identify Social & Emotional Development in Young Children & Maternal Depression in New Mothers

Did you know that during pediatric visits, physicians often miss opportunities to provide preventive developmental and psychosocial services to young children, and often use informal assessments rather than validated screening instruments to identify children with delays?  As a result, children with developmental disabilities and mental health problems are not identified during crucial early years. With the use of validated screening tools and a team approach to delivering developmental care children with developmental disabilities and delays can be correctly identified and referred to the appropriate agency.

Not sure how to find information on these screening tools, or referral information that is accurate and comprehensive? IAFP is here to help!  The Enhancing Developmentally Oriented Primary Care (EDOPC) project, a partnership of the IAFP, the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Advocate Health Care Healthy Steps Program, and the Ounce of Prevention Fund, has developed education programs focused on the developmental health and care of young children.

The IAFP has developed two CME activities focused on the developmental health of young children.  The Social/Emotional Development and Screening, including Autistic Spectrum Disorders CME activity includes information on which "red flags" to look for in children 15-18 months old, the benefits of screening children for delays, how the conduct and score validated screening tools, and who to refer children do.  The Identifying Postpartum Depression during the Well-Child Visit: Resources for Screening, Referral, and Treatment teleconference will discuss the effects of postpartum depression on children and families, and the effects of a depressed mother on a child's cognitive development. Attendees will also learn how identify risk and protective factors of a maternally depressed woman, and use the Edinburgh screening tool.

Each teleconference is an hour long and worth 1.0 Prescribed or Category 1 credits.

To sign up to attend one or both of these CME teleconferences please fill out the registration form and fax or mail it back to the IAFP office.
